GOP senator: Obama isn’t ‘comfortable’ being commander in chief

Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) said Friday that President Obama isn’t “comfortable” making military decisions.

“I think this president has never ever been comfortable being commander in chief. He’s just not comfortable,” Corker said during the Republican National Lawyers Association’s 2015 National Policy Conference.

{mosads}”He has decision memo after decision memo after decision memo sitting on his desk, I know they are there … and he cannot bring himself to do it.”

Corker was responding to a question about why the United States hasn’t provided lethal military support to Ukraine to help combat Russian-backed separatists.

Corker, who is chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, said he tries to focus on working with the administration instead of getting “a piece of hide.”

“I wake every day not with the thought that I’m going to get a piece of hide of this administration,” he said. “My thought is they act differently, they think differently, but the executive branch, let’s face it, carries out foreign policy. What can I do to, what can I do to move things in a positive direction.”

Despite trying to work with the administration, Corker added that he’s “disappointed often.”

“Every now and then I have to send an email to the chief of staff … and just say you guys are so hard to help,” the Tennessee Republican said.

The administration and Corker are currently at odds over talks with Iran.

Corker is behind legislation that would require the administration to submit any deal on Iran’s nuclear program to Congress for review. Obama wouldn’t be able to roll back sanctions for roughly two months while lawmakers debated the deal.

Corker, who has also criticized the administration for being slow to respond in Syria and Ukraine, suggested that the White House struggles with decision-making.

“They have great difficulty in making decisions,” he said. “Then after they make them and try to execute it’s like the gang that cannot shoot straight.”
