Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) slammed Sen. Ted Cruz on Tuesday, saying the Texas Republican “can’t get anything done legislatively” and “is pretty much done for” in the Senate.

“Ted has chosen to make this really personal and called people dishonest in leadership and call them names, which really goes against the decorum and also against the rules of the Senate, and as a consequence he can’t get anything done legislatively,” he told Fox News Radio.
“He is pretty much done for and stifled, and it’s really because of personal relationships, or lack of personal relationships, and it is a problem.”
{mosads}Paul’s comments come after Cruz was unable to garner enough support among his colleagues to get a roll call vote on an amendment Monday, with Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) the only senator to back him. It’s the second time since late July that his Republican colleagues have helped deny the Texas Republican a “sufficient second.”
Both Cruz and Paul, who are running for the Republican presidential nomination, have battled with their leadership since the GOP took over the Senate majority in January. But Paul suggested he’s tried to avoid making policy fights, including a battle earlier this year on the National Security Agency (NSA), personal.
Asked whether Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) had “let him down,” Paul said instead that “I would say we have disagreements on tactics.”
Referring back to Cruz, Paul added that “I am just as hardcore. … I just chose not to call people liars on the Senate floor, and it’s just a matter of different perspectives on how best to get to the end result.”
Cruz ruffled feathers among his Senate colleagues earlier this year when he accused McConnell of lying over whether he made a deal tied to reauthorizing the Export-Import Bank.
The speech raised questions on whether the Texas Republican had violated Senate rules, and it earned him swift pushback from McConnell’s allies in the Senate.
