GOP senator: I'd support Kasich over Cruz

Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) suggested Tuesday that out of the party's remaining presidential field, he would be most likely to support Ohio Gov. John Kasich.

Asked if he would support Kasich, who is trailing in the battle for delegates, over Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) or current front-runner Donald Trump, Flake quickly replied, "Yes."

"If I were Kasich, I'd do exactly what he's doing. Get to the convention with some delegates," he told reporters.

Flake, who was asked if Republicans face a choice between Cruz or Trump, suggested GOP voters have a third option in Kasich.

"He certainly would have been more likely than Ryan, simply because he is running and he has delegates," he added, referring to Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.).

Ryan is expected to give a speech on Tuesday afternoon ruling out a presidential bid after weeks of speculation about his plans.

Flake said his comments are not an endorsement of Kasich.

The Arizona Republican - who has repeatedly raised concerns about Trump's impact on the party - previously endorsed Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), who ended his presidential bid after losing his home state's primary.
