According to the Post, other supporters of the Exxon Mobil CEO have also called Rubio to try to coax him into backing Tillerson’s confirmation.

When word of the nomination got out last weekend, the former presidential candidate tweeted that “being a 'friend of Vladimir'" was not what he was looking for in a top U.S. diplomat.

Tillerson has been widely criticized for his ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who awarded him the Russian Order of Friendship after the two negotiated a massive energy deal in 2011.

Rubio was one of the GOP Russia hawks to question the confirmation, but it is unclear whether his skepticism has subsided following the phone call with the former vice president.
