Mark McGrath: Man on campaign trail ‘not the Trump I knew’

President-elect Donald Trump led a controversial campaign in his quest for the White House, but Sugar Ray rocker Mark McGrath tells The Hill that the man out on the stump was not the Trump he knew from “Celebrity Apprentice.”

“You know, it’s funny. The rhetoric I saw him using during the campaign is not the Trump I knew, you know? He was always a gentleman; he was always kind,” said McGrath, who appeared on Trump’s former NBC reality show in 2011.

{mosads}The performer was the sixth celebrity to be booted off the show that season, famously being fired by Trump instead of eccentric actor Gary Busey, who had ruffled feathers with his teammates.

“I spent eight hours in a room with Gary Busey and President-elect Donald Trump,” McGrath said with a laugh. “So I think the weirdest thing in the world is that he’s president right now.”

McGrath was in Washington to accept an award at a gala thrown by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Global Intellectual Property Center on Wednesday, honoring individuals in the intellectual property space — including McGrath, Billy Idol guitarist Billy Morrison and actor Richard Kind.

The Sugar Ray frontman told The Hill that he “never saw any violations of any sort” while on the reality show, countering reports from crew members that Trump had made sexist or racist comments behind the scenes of “Celebrity Apprentice” and its companion show, “The Apprentice.”

“He was a nice guy,” McGrath added. “You know, I got fired and he took the time the next day to sit me down in his office for a half-hour and say, ‘Mark, anything you need — you’re a great player.’

“My experience with Trump has always been positive, so, you know, he’s president and let’s hope for the best.”
