"Senator Ernst and her husband, Gail, are in the process of divorcing," a statement said. "They remain committed to their children and family, and ask for respect for their privacy during this difficult time." 


Joni and Gail Ernst, who have reportedly been married since 1992, have three adult daughters, according to The Des Moines Register.

Ernst was the first woman elected to Congress by Iowa. She was also the first female combat veteran elected to the Senate.
