Vice President Biden might not be the only “car junkie” in the West Wing.

A trip to a Ford factory outside of Detroit on Wednesday left President Obama drooling over the latest model of the auto manufacturer’s iconic Mustang sports car.

While touring the factory, Obama inspected versions of the company’s F-150 pick-up truck and the Focus, a compact sedan that has seen sales spike in recent years. But it was a cherry red Mustang that drew the most attention from Obama, who declared that he needed to get into the car.

“This is an American car, right here, this Mustang,” Obama said. “That's beautiful."

The president continued to swoon over the car when speaking to autoworkers shortly after his tour.

“I have to say I love Secret Service. I love the beast that they put me in,” Obama said, referencing the heavily-armored presidential limo.

“But I just had a chance to look at these new Mustangs, and I got to say that the Mustangs had a little more style, a little more flavor.”

He later told the crowd that he wanted to come to Michigan “because this state proves no matter how tough times get, Americans are tough.”

“And plus, I wanted to see the new Mustang,” he added.

The appearance echoed Biden’s appearance at the Detroit auto show a year ago, when the vice president declared himself a “car junkie” and spoke of his father’s work managing a pair of car dealerships.

During that trip, Biden showered praise on the Corvette Z06, a new sports car unveiled at the auto show by GM. The vice president compared it to a 1967 Corvette Stingray his father gave him as a wedding present that he still keeps at his Delaware home.

“I just want you to know that that ’67 was zero to 60 in 5.5 seconds,” Biden said. “I didn’t do that…but it was. But this new Corvette, Z06, is zero to 60, allegedly, in 3.4 seconds.”
