A Las Vegas lawmaker on Thursday made an unusual pitch for business in her hometown during a hearing on unemployment.

After listening to witnesses propose job-training programs and increased unemployment benefits at a House Ways and Means subcommittee hearing, Rep. Shelley Berkley (D-Nev.) offered a different idea to spur the economy in her district.

“What would help me a lot is if you came to Vegas and played and drank like crazy” Berkley told the five witnesses. The audience’s laughter muted the hearing’s serious atmosphere.

After the chuckles subsided, Berkley reiterated her support for the economic stimulus package, which she said “has saved the state of Nevada."
