Christian PAC supports Jewish Republican leader

House GOP Whip Eric Cantor (Va.) has the support of a group that boasts its backing of "conservative Christian candidates."

Cantor, however, is Jewish.

GING-PAC, a committee that stands for "Government is Not God," states on its web site that unlike other Christian groups, it can "run radio and TV ads favoring conservative Christian candidates. GING-PAC can even give money directly to those candidates."

Their support for Cantor was flagged by a Democratic campaign operative. The committee's founder, William Murray, told The Hill he will be changing the wording on the group's site.

"We endorse social conservatives. They don't have to be Christian," Murray said. The reference to "conservative Christian candidates" should mean candidates with "Judeo-Christian values," he said. "We have backed several Jewish candidates before."

Murray notes the group has supported Cantor, the only Jewish Republican in Congress, since the five-term lawmaker began his tenure.
