Though he doesn't drive much these days, President Obama's last car was a Ford, he said Thursday.

Touting the turnaround of the U.S. auto industry during remarks at a Ford plant in Chicago, Obama noted that he purchased a small Ford SUV just before his 2008 campaign heated up.

"I should add, by the way, my most recent car was a Ford," he said, drawing applause. "I had one of those Ford Escapes, and that was a spiffy car."

Two months later, however, then-Sen. Obama (shown here in a concept Ford Focus) was assigned a Secret Service detail who "wouldn't let me drive anymore."

"So it only had like 2,000 miles after five years, but I really enjoyed those 2,000 miles," he said.
