Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) welcomed basketball great Shaquille O'Neal to the Boston Celtics on Wednesday night using Twitter.

O'Neal, a 15-time All-Star center, signed with the Celtics on Wednesday, the team announced.

Kerry tweeted:

@THE_REAL_SHAQ Welcome to Massachusetts, big guy.

The three-time NBA finals MVP will replace Celtics center Kendrick Perkins, who is recovering from a knee injury.

"It is not every day that you can add a player of Shaquille's caliber to your team," Celtics president Danny Ainge said Wednesday. "His past experience speaks for itself, and we believe that he is a great fit for our roster."

Kerry recently used Twitter to weigh in on another piece of basketball news: LeBron James's highly anticipated (and choreographed) live announcement that he would join the Miami Heat.

Kerry tweeted

Wow this Lebron annct is a mde for tv production beyond anything we've ever attmpted! Lol
