The Capitol Hill community on Thursday mourned the loss of Chris Crowe, a longtime aide to Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-Texas), who died Wednesday afternoon of complications from meningitis. Crowe was 29 years old.

In addition to serving on Bernice Johnson's staff, at the time of his death Crowe was president of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Congressional Staff Association (LGBT CSA).

Crowe was a native of Gamaliel, Ky., and a graduate of Johns Hopkins University. He first came to Washington to work for Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) before joining Bernice Johnson's office in 2006.

In a statement Thursday, LGBT CSA spokeswoman Kat Skiles said, "to call [Crowe's] death a tragedy would be an incredible understatement. It’s devastating to fathom an individual as kind, strong and spirited as Chris leaving us due to troubles with of all things – his heart." Bernice Johnson also praised Crowe's "generous spirit and good humor," adding, "he never met a stranger."

A memorial book is available for condolences in Rayburn House Office Building room 2468, and Crowe's friends and colleagues are planning a celebration of his life on Friday evening in Washington. Updated details on the celebration are available here.
