Rep. Speier advice to DC girls: 'Don't ever be afraid to fail'

Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.) knows that life isn't a fairy tale and she told area Girl Scouts and members of Girls, Inc. just that.

Speier spoke to the high school students Wednesday morning as part of the Congressional Take Our Daughters to Work Day.

"In life you can overcome almost anything --- I was a three time loser myself, in high school, and again for Congress and lieutenant governor of California," Speier said.

Speier spoke about how she didn't get married until age 37 and later she lost her husband in a car accident. The three-term lawmaker also told the girls how she once had an abortion due to medical complications, which caused audible gasps among the students.

Speier, who has two children now, was the first legislator to have a baby while in office.

"Don't ever be afraid to fail---you're just setting yourself up for success," she said.
