Rage Against the Machine guitarist to play anti-trade deal gig

Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello will perform at a concert protesting the White House’s Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal.

The July 23 gig in Denver will also feature appearances from actress Evangeline Lilly and bands including Anti-Flag and the Flobots, The Hill has learned.

{mosads}“Working people everywhere have had enough,” Morello said in a statement. “The TPP is nothing short of a corporate takeover of our democracy.

“That’s why people are rising up to stop it,” the rocker added. “Corporate lobbyists want to sneak TPP through Congress quietly; that means it’s time for us to get loud.”

Organizers told The Hill the performance is the first of several “Rock Against the TPP” shows nationwide.

The tour’s website lists a stop in Denver June 23–24, followed by four additional “top secret” shows elsewhere. The traveling performances will feature varying lineups in each city before ultimately concluding in late August.

“This fight against the TPP is not about right and left; it’s about right and wrong,” Lilly said. “The more people learn about the TPP, the less they like it.

“Whatever you’re passionate about, whether it’s human rights, internet freedom, climate change or food safety, the TPP is a bad deal for humanity, and a threat to the future of democracy. It’s our responsibility to sound the alarm, before it’s too late.”

President Obama has repeatedly vowed the TPP will grow jobs and wages for U.S. workers. The potential Asia-Pacific trade deal includes 12 nations and has become a controversial topic during this election cycle.

Critics say the pact would inspire American firms to ship jobs overseas at the expense of the U.S. economy. They have also bemoaned the deal’s labor and environmental protections as too weak.

Obama said late last month the TPP would eventually win over bipartisan critics and pass in Congress.

“I remain confident we’re going to get it done,” he said in Vietnam. “It’s good for the country. It’s good for America. It’s good for the region. It’s good for the world.”
