Former late night host Jay Leno said he was glad he didn't have to cover the 2016 election and missed "simpler times" when “Clinton was horny and Bush was dumb.”

"I was lucky I lived in an era where Clinton was horny and Bush was dumb," he said in an interview on "The Bernie and Sid Show" on Wednesday.

"You know, it was what we called a simpler time. I'm sort of glad I wasn't in this one... this is like the ugliest campaign.

"Ultimately there's a negative effect. Look at the whole country, the whole country is bummed out," he added. "It's too ugly. You fall into that trap if you have a late night show, everybody ends up doing the same Trump joke each night."

Leno said he missed the days when politicians would argue over a policy issue and then "grab a beer" together.

Earlier this month, Leno told The Salt Lake Tribune he didn't miss TV, adding that, "One side hates the other side. Each side thinks the other side is idiots and nobody respects anybody's opinions. In that sense, I don't really miss it. I'm glad I'm kind of sitting this one out."

The comedian was the host of "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" from 1992 to 2014, not including a year-long gap in 2010 when he hosted "The Jay Leno Show" in primetime.

He has continued stand-up tours and made several late night appearances during the election.
