About two dozen people gathered outside the VP's residence to thank Biden before he leaves office when Biden made an unexpected appearance, speaking to the group and even donning his famous aviator sunglasses, according to The Huffington Post.

“It has been the honor of my life serving, I really mean that,” he told the crowd. “And, you know, look, there’s still a lot more that has to be done. Look, we got to give this other administration a chance too, okay? So, this is the way democracy works.”

Kathryn Kohn, a 19-year-old American University student, told The Huffington Post Biden's appearance was a "total surprise."

“Earlier, the Secret Service came out, and I was like ‘Oh, well, maybe, that’d be nice.’ And then he shows up and it’s like, ‘That’s the guy, there he is. That’s No. 1 – the guy we love,' " Kohn said.

The event was called "Thank you, Uncle Joe." Its online listing said it was meant to honor "the man, the meme, the legend" for his work, adding that "over the past eight years, we've been blessed to have a national treasure serve as our Vice President."
