GOP senator grabs lunch, swimming tips with Michael Phelps
WE HEAR: Don’t challenge Sen. John Thune in the pool — the South Dakota Republican just got some swimming advice from “The Flying Fish” himself.
Twenty-eight-time Olympic medalist Michael Phelps and Thune were among a group of guests eyed dining together Monday at The Oval Room in downtown Washington. The get-together at the New American cuisine destination lasted about two hours.
Phelps testified on Tuesday at a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee hearing on anti-doping efforts.
A spokesman for Thune, who led an inquiry on doping in international competition at the Commerce Committee, tells ITK that his boss is an “avid sports fan.” According to the lawmaker’s office, Thune and Phelps talked about ways to “ensure clean competition, swimming technique, and Saddleback Church Pastor Rick Warren’s book ‘The Purpose Driven Life.’ “
