Former NFL star John Elway says Judge Neil Gorsuch, President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, belongs on America’s highest court.

“It is with my highest recommendation that I support Judge Neil Gorsuch’s nomination to the United States Supreme Court,” he said in a Monday letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee, as first reported by the Colorado Springs Gazette.

“A native of Colorado, Neil has demonstrated tremendous intelligence, character and fairness while serving for more than a decade on the United States Courts of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit,” added Elway, the general manager of the Denver Broncos.

Elway said Gorsuch's "credentials, integrity and sound moral compass" make him a perfect candidate for the bench.

Trump in January nominated Gorsuch, whose appeals court covers Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Utah and parts of Oklahoma, as replacement for Justice Antonin Scalia, who died in February 2016.

Gorsuch’s confirmation hearings began Monday amid threats from Senate Democrats to filibuster him.

Roughly 10 Democrats are facing reelection in 2018 in states carried by Trump in the November elections.
