Tom Hanks on Friday explained why he’s been buying the White House press corps new coffee machines since President George W. Bush’s administration: “Those poor bastards need coffee.”

The Academy Award-winning actor revealed why he keeps buying new coffee machines during the “Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”

“I’ve done that for Democrats and Republican administrations because those poor bastards need coffee,”Hanks said. “It’s as simple as that.”

He most recently sent the press corps a new coffee machine in March, to which Colbert joked that covering President Trump is probably keeping reporters awake anyway.

{mosads}”I have a feeling the problem now is there’s an awful lot of spit coffee on people’s laps,” Hanks jokingly responded before acting out a reporter spitting coffee in shock and yelling “Are you kidding me?!”

“I think a lot of that’s going on,” Hanks said.

He explained that he first bought a coffee machine after visiting Bush-era reporters in the press room, where he saw an old Mr. Coffee machine. He decided to get them a new one to help “in their fight for Truth, Justice and the American Way,” and has continued to offer upgraded coffee makers ever since.
