Colbert mocks Trump turnover: ‘It’s the White House closeout sale’

Late night host Stephen Colbert mocked the White House for its rapid turnover of staff members on Thursday, one day after the resignation announcement of President Trump’s communications director, Hope Hicks.

“White House meltdown on full display,” Colbert said on CBS’s “The Late Show.”

“Well, the White House tours must be getting really interesting. ‘OK, now we’re passing the Lincoln Bedroom. On your right, you’ll see John Kelly suffocating Jared Kushner with a pillow, and on your left, you’ll see the claw marks on the wall left by Steve Bannon as they dragged him to the curb,'” he joked.

Hicks, a longtime aide to Trump, was his fifth communications director to step down in less than 15 months.

Chief of staff John Kelly, who took the job after the ousting last year of former Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, has worked to impose order on the president’s inner circle, but high-level departures have been a regular feature of the Trump White House.

The former Marine general has also clashed with Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner, who this week had his top secret security clearance downgraded over a crackdown on temporary clearances following last month’s resignation of staff secretary Rob Porter.

“It’s the White House closeout sale, every staff member must go! Act now and Trump will throw in a free Jeff Sessions!” Colbert joked of Trump’s reignited feud with the attorney general over the Justice Department’s in-house investigation of foreign intelligence surveillance warrants.

Reports emerged on Thursday that top economic adviser Gary Cohn may be eyeing the exits over Trump’s decision to impose massive tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

Reports also surfaced that the White House was considering a replacement for national security adviser H.R. McMaster, who Colbert joked violated Trump’s policy on not acknowledging Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

“Once McMaster leaves, I believe the entire White House staff will consist of Trump, Jared, Ivanka and senior policy adviser can of Diet Coke,” Colbert remarked.
