Subject of ‘Serial’ podcast to get new trial on all charges

A Maryland appeals court on Thursday granted a new trial on all charges for Adnan Syed, whose case was the subject of the popular podcast “Serial.”
The Maryland Court of Special Appeals upheld a prior ruling that Syed should receive a new trial, according to multiple reports. The panel of three judges ruled that Syed had ineffective assistance during his trial for the murder of his former girlfriend, Hae Min Lee.

Syed’s attorneys successfully argued in 2016 that Syed should be granted a new trial. However, prosecutors appealed that decision to the appellate court.
Syed was accused and convicted in 2000 of burying Lee’s body in in a shallow grave in a Baltimore park.
His story was the subject of the first season of “Serial,” which examined the events leading up to and after the murder of Lee. The podcast raised questions about whether Syed received a fair trial.
