Cruz called Trump a “flash bang grenade” in the essay, saying that the president had followed through on his promise to "disrupt the status quo."

"The fact that his first year as Commander in Chief disoriented and distressed members of the media and political establishment is not a bug but a feature,” Cruz wrote.

Readers noted that the former presidential campaign rivals have been highly critical of each other in the past.

Trump suggested during the campaign that Cruz's father was involved in the John F. Kennedy assassination and retweeted a tweet critical of Cruz's wife's appearance.

Cruz called Trump “utterly amoral” and a “pathological liar” in response.

Twitter users quickly noted Cruz and Trump’s past battles in light of the flattering profile.
