Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel hit President TrumpDonald John TrumpFive takeaways from Cruz, O'Rourke's debate showdown Arpaio files libel suit against New York Times IMF's Christine Lagarde delays trip to Middle East MORE for his walk back of his comments siding with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s denial of election interference, calling the president “a liar and not even a good one.”

Kimmel, on his show Tuesday night, took issue with Trump saying he meant to say “I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be Russia” who interfered in the 2016 election during his press conference with Putin, instead of “why it would be Russia.”

“When you said ‘I don’t see any reason why it would be Russia,’ for a minute there it almost seemed like you were hiding something from us,” Kimmel joked.

“Like it was something Putin knew about you that you wanted him to keep quiet. Now it all makes sense.”

Kimmel also asked “which genius” on Trump’s team “came up with this idea” of saying Trump had misspoken.

“Who in that administration told him it would be good to announce he meant to say 'would' instead of 'wouldn’t?' " the late-night host asked.

“I bet it was [first lady] Melania [Trump], she hates him the most,” he joked.

Trump drew massive backlash for his initial comments Monday siding with Putin's denials of election meddling over the U.S. intelligence community's conclusion that Russia did interfere in the election.

The president sought to clarify those comments Tuesday.

“I accept our intelligence community's conclusion that Russia's meddling in the 2016 election took place,” Trump said, adding, “could be other people also. A lot of people out there.”
