In a short segment Tuesday night following his monologue, Colbert joked that he had an "emergency" glass encased in its own glass protection on standby in case he needed an "emergency drink" throughout the night.

"If for any reason I need to pour myself an 'emergency drink,' I can merely break glass...for glass."

Seconds later, Colbert announced to his audience that Cruz had maintained control of his Senate seat and the audience's groans erupted into laughter as Colbert broke the glass case with a large bottle of what appeared to be bourbon to retrieve the glassware.

"Save some of that to snort later," he added, jokingly, of the "glass" shards now littering his desk.

O'Rourke's candidacy gained national attention after a video of him defending NFL players for kneeling during the national anthem went viral, earning him support from prominent celebrities and Democratic donors around the country.

The Democrat came within single digits of ousting Cruz Tuesday night but was ultimately unable to overcome the incumbent senator, as Democrats retook the House but Republicans expanded their Senate majority.
