Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr joined calls for Rep. Beto O’Rourke to launch a presidential run in 2020, following the Texas Democrat's failed Senate bid against Sen. “Beto 2020,” Kerr tweeted.

O’Rourke lost his race to unseat Cruz on Tuesday, but many of his supporters see his strong performance in the deep-red state as an indication of future political potential.

O’Rourke won 48 percent of the vote in Texas, 3 percentage points short of Cruz. Texas has not elected a Democrat to the Senate in decades.

Thousands of Twitter users, including celebrities, used the #Beto2020 hashtag in the hours after the race was called.

The El Paso congressman, who gained national popularity in his effort to unseat Cruz, gave a “definitive no” on running for president during a town hall last month.

Kerr is often a politically outspoken figure in the sports world, repeatedly criticizing the Trump administration and calling for gun control.
