Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein, who is facing sexual assault charges, wrote in a leaked email to friends this week that his legal case is the "worst nightmare of my life," according to The New York Times.

“I’ve had one hell of a year,” Weinstein wrote in an email on Monday, according to the Times. “The worst nightmare of my life.”

The Times reported that the email quickly sparked backlash from women who have accused Weinstein of sexual assault or sexual harassment.

Weinstein's attorney, Benjamin Brafman, told the Times that Weinstein had sent the email to close friends and that it was not meant as part of a legal strategy.

But Brafman also told the newspaper that he has an “obligation to level the playing field" against negative publicity.

“We are getting killed by people writing articles, books and creating a sensation out of a case that has been in shambles,” he said. “It’s part of my job to defend Harvey in the public arena where unfortunately the case is being litigated, and in the courtroom. I have a defense strategy, it is not a media strategy.”

Weinstein currently faces charges brought over the allegations of two women after charges related to a third woman were dropped by a Manhattan prosecutor in October.

More than 80 women have come forward to accuse Weinstein of sexual assault or harassment since last year.
