Retired NBA star Dikembe Mutombo flew an 8-year-old boy named Matadi from Africa to the United States this week for life-altering surgery.

Mutombo can be seen in footage captured by TMZ Sports meeting with the young boy at the Los Angeles International Airport on Wednesday.

The NBA Hall of Famer can then be seen hugging Matadi, who has a large tumor on the left side of his face, and welcoming him.

Mutombo told the publication he met Matadi earlier this year at a hospital he built in Congo.

"I was touched by what he's going through as a young boy who's 8 years old. Not going to school. The way he's been pushed away by the society," Mutombo told the outlet.

"His mom has to keep him in the bedroom every day because people are talking bad about him,” he continued.

Mutombo had reportedly paid for the young boy’s flight from Africa and arranged for the doctors at the Osborne Head & Neck Institute to operate on Matadi for free.

After the operation, Matadi will reportedly return to Congo where Mutombo is hopeful he will be able to return to his schooling and live a more normal life.
