Assange, the WikiLeaks founder, was arrested at the Ecuadoran Embassy in London earlier Thursday at the request of U.S. authorities.
The Department of Justice on Thursday charged Assange with computer hacking in connection to the release of classified government cables from former Army private and intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning.
His organization also published emails from then-Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton‘s campaign and the Democratic National Committee in 2016.
Anderson, the former star of “Baywatch,” said last year that Assange was “misunderstood” and the victim of unfair media coverage.
“He’s so misunderstood, especially in Hollywood, and really hated, because of the Clinton monopoly on the media,” Anderson told The Hollywood Reporter at the time.
Anderson referred to Assange as one of her “favorite people” in a 2017 blog post on her website.
“Julian is a human being who is extremely empathetic and cares deeply about the world,” Anderson wrote. “And because of his work he has made some powerful enemies in a few countries — America especially by exposing them.”
