Long Island rep wishes Billy Joel happy birthday on House floor

Zeldin — who serves as the representative for eastern Long Island — applauded the Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter for staying true to his roots, noting Joel frequently references the area in his music.  


"I rise today to wish a very happy 70th birthday to Billy Joel, a resident of the greatest congressional district in America, the 1st Congressional District of New York. He has sung about Allentown, he's sung about Vienna, but he never forgot where he came from,” Zeldin said in his speech.

“It's important, whether you're in politics or music or business, to never forget where you come from. He would sing songs about our bays, our beaches, our boaters, our fishermen, our restaurants, our media. He is someone who, to this very day, looks at Long Island as his home.”

While Joel is scheduled to perform at Madison Square Garden in New York City to mark the milestone on Thursday evening, Zeldin ensured the congratulated the singer on behalf of all the district.

“He has a concert tonight celebrating his 70th birthday with so many fans,” he said.

“But from everyone who lives in the [New York] 1st Congressional District, from all of Long Island, a happy birthday 70th birthday to a very special person. Happy birthday Billy Joel — I yield back.”
