NBCUniversal says tough new abortion restrictions in Georgia and other states will affect its decision about whether to film in those locations.

“We fully expect that the heartbeat bills and similar laws in various states will face serious legal challenges and will not go into effect while the process proceeds in court," NBCUniversal told The Hill in a statement on Thursday.

"If any of these laws are upheld, it would strongly impact our decision-making on where we produce our content in the future,” the company added.

NBCUniversal is joining other major production companies in warning about the fallout from the new laws. Other companies including Netflix, Disney and WarnerMedia have made similar statements about filming in Georgia, which is a major filming hub.

According to Variety, almost 40 Hollywood productions are being made in the state.

A number of states including Georgia have passed "heartbeat" abortion bills that would outlaw abortion once a fetal heartbeat can be detected, around six weeks into pregnancy. Georgia's law has not yet gone into effect.

In neighboring Alabama, the state's governor signed a law this month outlawing nearly all abortions, even in cases of rape and incest.
