Elton John ‘ashamed’ of Great Britain over Brexit

British musician Elton John said he is “ashamed” of his country over the handling of its decision to leave the European Union.

“I’m ashamed of my country for what it has done. It’s torn people apart … I am sick to death of politicians, especially British politicians,” John said at a recent concert in Verona, Italy, on Wednesday, according to The Guardian.

{mosads}“I am sick to death of Brexit. I am a European. I am not a stupid, colonial, imperialist English idiot,” he continued.

His comments follow similar remarks he shared last year criticizing the government’s handling of Brexit, saying then: “I don’t think people in Britain were told the truth to start with.”

“They were promised something that was completely ridiculous and wasn’t economically viable,” he said at the time, according to The Guardian.

He also called the country’s processes surrounding the 2016 vote held on the United Kingdom’s decision to leave the EU confusing, comparing it to “walking through Hampton Court maze blindfolded, being turned around 16 times and trying to find your way out.”

His comments come months after a handful of members from the U.K.’s Conservative Party quit over what they called the government’s “disastrous handling of Brexit.”

“The final straw for us has been this government’s disastrous handling of Brexit,” the lawmakers wrote in a letter to Prime Minister Theresa May in February. May said she was saddened by the news at the time but added that she would still continue pushing for Brexit.
