Comedian Tiffany Haddish postpones Atlanta show over Georgia abortion ban

Comedian and actress Tiffany Haddish has postponed an upcoming stand-up show in Atlanta over Georgia’s new law that would ban women from getting an abortion after fetal cardiac activity is detected, something that generally occurs within six weeks of a pregnancy.

“After much deliberation, I am postponing my upcoming show in Atlanta. I love the state of Georgia, but I need to stand with women and until they withdraw Measure HB481, I cannot in good faith perform there,” Haddish said in a statement on Saturday, according to CNN

Jennifer Walker of Brave Public Relations, which represents Fox Theatre in Atlanta, told the news network that venue would be offering refunds to those who bought tickets.

The move from Haddish makes her the latest celebrity to forcefully speak out against Georgia’s new restrictive abortion policy. Many actors and production companies have threatened to stop working in the state over the legislation, which was signed into law by Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) in May.

WarnerMedia, Netflix and Walt Disney have produced popular productions in Georgia. Each company has said that they would reconsider filming in Georgia if the legislation were to go into effect.

Under the law, women may still receive an abortion if the pregnancy is believed to be “medically futile.” Exceptions will also be granted to a woman whose life is at risk and if a police report has been filed related to rape or incest.

The measure is set to go into effect on Jan. 1. Planned Parenthood has already vowed to sue the state over the measure.

Governors in Ohio, Kentucky, Louisiana and Mississippi signed versions of what is known as the fetal “heartbeat” bill earlier this year.
