Alec Baldwin says the key to defeating President TrumpDonald John TrumpLawmakers release defense bill with parental leave-for-Space-Force deal House Democrats expected to unveil articles of impeachment Tuesday Houston police chief excoriates McConnell, Cornyn and Cruz on gun violence MORE in 2020 begins with Democrats winning local elections in Virginia.

"It’s hard to overstate just how much is riding on Virginia’s elections and how they could influence the ultimate fortunes of Trump and Republicans," the "30 Rock" star writes in an op-ed for USA Today, published Wednesday.

The commonwealth, Baldwin argues, "deserves the attention of all of us who are fed up with the bottomless corruption of the current occupant of the White House and his enablers at every level."

The 61-year-old actor, who won an Emmy Award in 2017 for his recurring portrayal of Trump on "Saturday Night Live," contends that Democrats winning power in Virginia's General Assembly on Nov. 5 could have nationwide implications.

"If Democrats take the General Assembly, they will control the legislature and the governor’s mansion when congressional redistricting arrives in the state in 2021, preventing more abuses of power by the notoriously gerrymandering Republicans," writes Baldwin. He also says if Democrats claim victory, the Equal Rights Amendment could get ratified, minimum wage could get a boost, and the state would have a "real opportunity" to pass gun safety legislation.

"I’ve had the opportunity to needle this president with blunt satire, a time-honored political tool," Baldwin, one of Trump's most outspoken Hollywood critics, writes. "Of course, that’s not enough. We have to do more."

The performer, a People for the American Way board member, traveled to Virginia last week and went door-to-door campaigning for Democratic candidates.

"Use this year’s legislative elections in Virginia on Tuesday to send an unmistakable message," Baldwin writes, "that Americans are eager to put an end to the dishonest and dishonorable Trump era."
