Actress Charlize Theron had challenges playing Megyn Kelly in ‘Bombshell’

Actress Charlize Theron said she found it difficult at first to find common ground with former anchor Megyn Kelly when trying to portray the former Fox News host in the upcoming “Bombshell” movie. The film chronicles some of the network’s top women’s story as they try and expose then-CEO Roger Ailes over alleged sexual harassment.

“This was not a person who was easy for me to wrap my arms around,” Theron said at a Friday night screening of the movie in Los Angeles, according to CNN

Theron said “from afar” it looks like she and Kelly have nothing in common, adding that Kelly has said “things that have been deeply upsetting” to her as a liberal. {mosads}

“But at the same time, as a woman, understanding what each of them went through and understanding what Megyn was facing, especially in those two weeks where she didn’t step forward and she didn’t support Gretchen [Carlson], that’s when I emotionally tapped into her because I started to see similarities between us, dare I say that,” Theron said, according to CNN.

Gretchen Carlson, another Fox News commentator is played by Nicole Kidman. Ailes is portrayed by John Lithgow.

The movie also features Margot Robbie as a fictional producer created for the story. Filmmakers said the role was inspired by the experiences of multiple real-life women, according to CNN.

“I saw a woman with ambition, with drive and all of a sudden I realized, ‘Shit this is the kind of stuff that’s been weaponized against me. I relate to that,'” Theron reportedly said. “That’s when it became clear to me just how important this story was. Because if we can see the power of the message through someone who we may not agree with or somebody who might even anger us, that tells you there’s something real there.”

Theron said she has “nothing but respect” for each of the women for what they stood up for and risked.

Carlson filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against Ailes in July 2016, alleging that she had been fired for rebuffing Ailes’s advances. Several other women followed, coming out with allegations of sexual harassment by Ailes.

Kelly later told investigators Ailes had made unwanted sexual advances toward her at the start of her career.

Ailes denied the allegations against him.

The former CEO died in May 2017, before the movie was announced.
