Michelle Obama says she’s donating more than half a million dollars from the sales of her memoir’s merchandise to her foundation’s efforts on girls’ education.

The former first lady will give “more than $500,000—the proceeds she derived from 2018 and 2019 merchandise sales related to her book, Becoming—to the Obama Foundation’s Girls Opportunity Alliance Fund,” according to a Tuesday statement from her and former President Obama’s office.

The organization aims to help boost grassroots leaders around the world who are focused on adolescent girls’ education.

Obama, 55, said in a statement that she considers helping others a “responsibility.”

“This duty of giving back is what my parents and grandparents taught me, and it’s a value I’ve tried to live by my entire life — because it’s not enough just to make your way through life, thinking only of yourself,” she said.

The contribution — announced on “Giving Tuesday,” a day when nonprofits encourage the public to open their wallets — was listed among the donations on the Girls Opportunity Alliance Fund’s GoFundMe page.

“Becoming” has sold more than 11.5 million copies worldwide since its release a year ago, according to its publisher.

“I’m proud to channel that enthusiasm toward girls around the world,” she said.

Obama, who launched the girls education initiative Let Girls Learn while at the White House in 2015, said, “My hope is that this donation will help more bold and brilliant girls reach their fullest potential, continuing upward on their path toward becoming the women they are meant to be.”
