"Queer Eye" star Jonathan Van Ness made history this week as the first non-female person to grace the cover of Cosmopolitan UK on their own in more than 30 years.

On the cover of the January 2020 issue, Van Ness, who identifies as gender nonconforming, dons an orange and pink gown with striped socks and Nike sneakers. Underneath his name, the cover line reads, “Yep, we did it. You’re totally welcome.”

“First non female cover star in 35 years,” Van Ness tweeted Monday.

Van Ness, the grooming expert on the Netflix hit show, uses he/him pronouns but identifies as nonbinary, telling Out Magazine in a June interview that “some days I feel like a man, but then other days I feel like a woman.”

Cosmopolitan UK Editor-in-Chief Claire Hodgson told Time that Van Ness embodies “all [the] qualities that resonate with our audience,” calling the 32-year-old “warm, funny, opinionated, kind and brave.”

“He is encouraging people to love who they are, which is at the heart of what our brand stands for,” Hodgson said. “We could all do with a little more self-love in our lives.”

Time notes that British boy band One Direction graced the cover of Cosmopolitan UK in December 2012, but Van Ness is the first solo non-female individual to be on the cover since Boy George in 1984.
