She was sent home after the performance, with her rendition of the song being voted the least liked of the night by the studio audience and judges.
Palin, the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee, told the show’s host, Nick Cannon, that she picked the bear costume based on her “Mama Bear” nickname from back in Alaska.
“I have been both hunter and hunted,” Palin, dressed as the bear, said in the pre-taped package before her performance, according to Variety. “But … this mama bear is coming out of hibernation. Maybe I’ve been a bit polarizing, but just like a bear, it’s been to protect my cubs. Under this mask, I found the courage to come out of my cage, stop hiding and face the world head on.”
Cannon reportedly said this “might be the most shocked” he’s ever been on the show.
None of the show’s judges guessed Palin was behind the costume, but judge Robin Thicke guessed comedian Tina Fey, who played Palin on “Saturday Night Live.”
