Tom Hanks and his wife, Rita Wilson, have returned to America after contracting the coronavirus and locking themselves in quarantine while visiting Australia.

Hanks announced the couple's safe arrival in a statement on social media.

"Hey, Folks… We're home now and, like the rest of America, we carry on with sheltering in place and social distancing. Many, many thanks to everyone in Australia who looked after us. Their care and guidance made possible our return to the USA. And many thanks to all of you who reached out with well wishes. Rita and I so appreciate it."

After the two were diagnosed with COVID-19, they were released from the hospital and self-quarantined in a rental property for 14 days following guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Hanks did not say whether he or Wilson still exhibited symptoms but noted they would remain sheltered in place and continue practicing social distancing.

The couple was visiting Australia for a film project when they fell ill from the novel coronavirus earlier this month.
