“Even if you can’t give the moms in your life a hug today, I hope you can give them an extra thank you today,” he tweeted on Sunday morning. “Thank you and Happy Mother’s Day to the woman who makes it all possible. Love you, @michelleobama.”

In the tweet, the former president included a photo taken by former White House photographer Pete Souza back in 2013 of him singing “Happy Birthday” to his wife.

The former first lady also took to social media to wish mothers who “are working tirelessly” amid the novel coronavirus pandemic, which data shows has killed nearly 80,000 people in the U.S. so far, a happy Mother’s Day on behalf of the Obama family.

“So many mothers are working tirelessly to get their families, workplaces, communities––and themselves––through this difficult time. They are heroes, and we should honor them today––and every day,” she tweeted. “From my family to yours, #HappyMothersDay.”

For this Mother’s Day, Michelle Obama said she was sending her “love to the Circle of Mothers, a group that no mother should ever––ever––have to join,” referring to a group founded by Trayvon Martin’s mother, Sybrina Fulton, that aims to unite and empower mothers whose children who have died by gun violence.

“Today, we grieve for their unthinkable losses, and we pledge to remember the names of their children. May their stories fuel our work for change,” she tweeted.

“On this Mother’s Day, let’s recognize all the mothers, grandmothers & motherly figures for their wisdom, love & commitment to their children & families,” Melania Trump said in the tweet.

“Take time today to thank a mother & let her know how much you appreciate her! Happy #MothersDay!” she added.
