Michael Jordan donates $100M to fight for racial equality
Legendary basketball star Michael Jordan announced on Friday that he and the Jordan brand are donating $100 million to causes supporting racial equality.
The joint statement by Jordan and his brand, produced by Nike Inc., vows to donate the $100 million over 10 years to “organizations dedicated to ensuring racial equality, social justice and greater access to education.”

“Black lives matter. This isn’t a controversial statement,” the announcement also says. “Until the ingrained racism that allows our country’s institutions to fail is completely eradicated, we will remain committed to protecting and improving the lives of Black people.”
The donation comes after Jordan condemned the killing of George Floyd in police custody last week as video of the death has sparked global calls for racial equality and an end to police brutality.
In his statement on Sunday, Jordan shared his condolences with Floyd’s family as well as “the countless others whose lives have been brutally and senselessly taken through acts of racism and injustice.”
“Our unified voice needs to put pressure on leaders to change our laws, or else we need to use our vote to create systemic change,” he wrote. “Every one of us needs to be part of the solution, and we must work together to ensure justice for all.”
