Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt has tested positive for the coronavirus, Jamaica's health ministry confirmed to Reuters late Monday.

Earlier Monday, the champion sprinter announced that he will "stay in" and away from others as he awaits the results of a coronavirus test. Bolt was tested after being exposed to somebody who tested positive for the virus.

“I’m trying to be responsible, so I’m going to stay in,” Bolt said in a video on social media.

At the time, he said he was not experiencing symptoms.

Bolt, who retired in 2017 after winning eight Olympic gold medals, reportedly attended a surprise birthday party days earlier for his 34th birthday.  Bolt's party was attended by English soccer player Raheem Sterling and several other sports starts, The Guardian reported.

Jamaica, where Bolt resides, has reported more than 1,500 cases of COVID-19 and 16 deaths.
