Two-time NBA champion Pau Gasol and wife Catherine McDonnell announced the birth of their first child on Sunday, revealing they named their daughter after former teammate Kobe Bryant’s daughter Gianna Bryant.
“Our little one has finally arrived!! The delivery went really well and we couldn’t be happier,” he shared on Instagram. “Elisabet Gianna Gasol, a very meaningful name for our super beautiful daughter!! #girldad.”
Kobe and Gianna Bryant both tragically died in a helicopter crash in January of this year that also killed seven others.
The couple also announced that Kobe Bryant’s wife, Vanessa Bryant, was chosen to be their daughter’s godmother.
According to People Magazine, Vanessa Bryant also shared a post celebrating on Instagram, writing: “My goddaughter is here!!!! Congratulations @paugasol@catmcdonnell7 Love you 3 so much! So touched by your request to honor my Gigi Can’t wait to hold Elisabet Gianna Gasol.”
