Bill Nye explains importance of wearing masks in viral TikTok
Science presenter Bill Nye addressed misinformation about mask wearing and its effectiveness against COVID-19 in a TikTok posted Friday.
The video from the former PBS host responded to claims from skeptics of the scientific consensus on the prevention of viral transmission, who have pondered whether the spread of microscopic viruses is hindered at all by the threads of a cloth or surgical mask.
Using a colander and other props, Nye explained how the bodily fluids via which COVID-19 and other viruses are transmitted were in fact largely stopped or reduced by the usage of a mask.
The former “Bill Nye the Science Guy” host joined the Netflix series “Bill Nye Saves the World” in 2017 and in recent years has worked to debunk misinformation about scientific issues such climate change caused by humans.
In 2019, he came out in support of the Green New Deal and its co-sponsor, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), in a tweet calling for the U.S. to seriously address climate change.
“AOC gets it. She sees that fear is dividing us. We can address income inequality. We can address climate change, if we get together and get to work. #SXSW @AOC,” he tweeted at the time along with a picture of the two at the South By Southwest festival.
