Smugglers were busted throwing seven pounds of barbecued chicken wings and other contraband over a fence at a Mississippi prison, authorities said.

The Mississippi Department of Corrections said on Tuesday that smugglers threw more than 25 packages across a remote section of the prison’s 18-foot-tall perimeter fence.

In addition to the chicken wings, corrections officers at the South Mississippi Correctional Institution also recovered four pounds of marijuana, 38 cellphones, an assortment of cigars and 20 pounds of tobacco and rolling papers.

The contraband was collected early Monday morning, the department said. Some of the goods were sewn into footballs, which cleared the fences.

MDOC Commissioner Burl Cain said in a statement that gang leaders use contraband to control other inmates.

“Now we’re installing and using the latest security systems, drones overhead, and cameras and scanners everywhere plus we’re recruiting and hiring the best and brightest criminal justice graduates,” Cain said. “Governor [Tate] Reeves (R) wants us to bring Mississippi Corrections into the 21st Century and we are.”

Inmates connected with the smuggling will lose eligibility for early release, the department said.
