Elton John rips Vatican for refusing to bless same-sex unions

Elton John on Tuesday blasted the Vatican after its announcement that the Roman Catholic Church cannot bless same-sex unions because God “cannot bless sin.”

John called the move hypocritical in an Instagram post in which he shared screenshots of two news articles with headlines reading "Catholic church cannot bless same-sex marriage, Vatican decrees," and "How the Vatican Spent Millions on Elton John's Biopic."

"How can the Vatican refuse to bless gay marriages because they 'are sin', yet happily make a profit from investing millions in 'Rocketman' — a film which celebrates my finding happiness from my marriage to David?? #hypocrisy," John captioned the post.

According to the 2019 Daily Beast story that John included in his post, the Vatican spent nearly $4.5 million toward financing "Men in Black: International" and "Rocketman."

"While investing in mainstream entertainment is hardly sinful, the great contradiction is that the Catholic Church preaches to the devout that homosexuality is a sin," the Daily Beast wrote at the time.

The Vatican announced its decision Monday and maintained that it is “not intended to be a form of unjust discrimination,” saying the church is “motivated by a sincere desire to welcome and accompany homosexual persons."
