Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs pens open letter to corporations about supporting Black-owned media

Musician, producer and entrepreneur Sean “Diddy” Combs in an open letter Thursday slammed large corporations for failing to support Black-owned media.

In the piece, posted to Comb’s media site Revolt, he wrote, “The same feet these companies use to stand with us in solidarity are the same feet they use to stand on our necks.”

In particular, the Grammy-award winner called out General Motors (GM) for pointing to Revolt as one of the Black-owned media companies it supports but not following through.

Combs acknowledged that Revolt receives advertising revenue from GM, but said the relationship is not a model of a successful partnership.

“REVOLT, just like other Black-owned media companies, fights for crumbs while GM makes billions of dollars every year from the Black community,” Combs wrote.

He continued, “It’s disrespectful that Black-owned media companies only represent 1% of the total advertising market,” noting that in 2019 corporations spent around $239 billion in advertising. Combs estimated that General Motors in particular spent around $3 billion on ads, only $10 million of which went to Black-owned media.

Combs said he didn’t intend to assassinate GM’s character through his open letter, but wanted to make a point that businesses that profit off the Black community should be returning the favor.

“We demand that Corporate America reinvest an equitable percentage of what you take from our community back into our community,” he wrote.

Combs concluded the letter with a plea: “If you love us, pay us!”
