Legendary musician Elton John called out fellow recording artist DaBaby over controversial remarks the rapper made during a concert. 

John, in a Twitter thread on Wednesday, said that he was shocked to “read about the HIV misinformation and homophobic statements made” at the rapper’s recent concert. 

John shared information from his AIDS foundation that HIV has affected more than 70 million people around the world and that openly gay Black men have a 50 percent chance of contracting the virus, adding that the “stigma and shame” surrounding the virus is what’s causing the “vulnerability.”

“Homophobic and HIV mistruths have no place in our society and industry and as musicians, we must spread compassion and love for the most marginalised people in our communities,” he continued. “A musician’s job is to bring people together.”

DaBaby, whose real name is Jonathan Lyndale Kirk, drew massive criticism over remarks made during his set at the Rolling Loud Miami concert over the weekend, Pitchfork reported.

“If you didn’t show up today with HIV, AIDS or any of them deadly sexually transmitted diseases that’ll make you die in two to three weeks, then put your cellphone lighter up,” the “Suge” rapper said during his set. “Fellas, if you ain’t sucking dick in the parking lot, put your cellphone lighter up!”

Pop singer Dua Lipa, who previously worked with the rapper on a remix of her song “Levitating,” posted through her Instagram story that she was surprised and “horrified” by DaBaby’s comments, adding that she stands with the LGBTQ community 100 percent, according to Pitchfork.  

DaBaby addressed the criticism against him by saying that HIV/AIDS patients have the right to be upset with him and he had “no intentions on offending anybody.”
