The CBS "Late Show" host detailed the birthday bash snafu during his show's Monday monologue. Colbert said originally he and his wife, Evie, were "honored" to be invited to Obama's Martha's Vineyard shindig to celebrate the ex-commander in chief's 60th birthday.
The celebrity-studded gathering over the weekend, first reported by The Hill, was "significantly [scaled] back" amid concerns of the delta variant of the coronavirus, an Obama spokeswoman told The New York Times. The event, which faced widespread criticism, was eventually limited to the Obamas' close friends and family, according to Obama's rep.
When they initially got the invitation to the gathering, Colbert said he was "obviously, totally going."
"We booked a flight, got a hotel. Then five days before the party, I got a voicemail saying they were scaling back," Colbert, 57, said.
Leaked photos from the party show several high-profile guests — including Erykah Badu and H.E.R. — at the exclusive celebration, with a grinning Obama seen on the dance floor.
"It just goes to show you kids that if you work hard, put in your time and get to be the No. 1 show in late-night television, you too can get disinvited from the cool kids party," Colbert quipped.
But the performer appeared to take getting axed in stride, saying, "By the way, Mr. Former President: My own 60th birthday is coming up in three years and you, sir, are not ... going to want to miss it."
"Please come. I'd be so honored if you came," Colbert exclaimed.
"I'll scale me back to make room for you and Michelle, obviously," he joked. "You're lovely people."
