Jason Aldean says Californians ‘should be outraged’ over school vaccine mandate

Country singer Jason Aldean wrote in an Instagram post Sunday that Californians should be “outraged” by Gov. Gavin Newsom‘s (D) vaccine mandate for schools.

“So let me get this straight! It is no longer our decisions as parents (or free Americans) to make decisions about our kids, Gavin Newsom makes those decisions for us now??” Aldean wrote in the post.

“You gotta be kidding me! People in California should be outraged and people everywhere else better start standing up and speaking out NOW. This is not how America and being free works.”

Newsom announced at the end of last week that the COVID-19 vaccine would be mandated for California students once it is fully approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The mandate would apply to those in grades 7 to 12, as the vaccine has only be approved for emergency use in children over the age of 12.

The mandate could begin as early as January, depending on how long it takes for the FDA to issue a full approval.

The governor announced in August that all teachers and staff in the state would be required to either get vaccinated or receive regular testing.

In the past, Newsom has come under fire from opponents for measures put in place to mitigate the spread of coronavirus. The California governor recently survived a recall election over his initial handling of the virus and his administration’s restrictions.

Schools have also been a battleground for debate over mask mandates. In states such as Florida, Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, an ally of former President Trump, has said that whether a child wears a mask should be a choice made by a parent or guardian. DeSantis’s measure banning school mask mandates has sparked criticism and defiance from some school boards in the state.

Aldean’s Instagram post comes after his wife faced backlash on social media for using the couple’s two young children in promoting a clothing line featuring anti-Biden T-shirts and apparel. The children sported T-shirts that read “Hidin’ From Biden.”
