Tanzanian novelist wins Nobel for portrayals of colonialism’s effects
Tanzanian author Abdulrazak Gurnah was awarded the 2021 Nobel Prize in literature on Thursday, the first person from that country to secure the coveted award.
Gurnah was praised by the Swedish Academy for “his uncompromising and compassionate penetration of the effects of colonialism and the fate of the refugee in the gulf between cultures and continents,” according the Nobel Prize’s website.
He was raised on the Tanzanian island of Zanzibar in the Indian Ocean before traveling to England in the 1960s as a refugee. Much of his work features “the theme of the refugee’s disruption,” the website added.
